A renewable energy co-operative in the heart of Canada's largest urban area.

Funded by a renewable energy co-operative made up of nearly 700 members, and a partnership with Oshawa Power and Utilities Corporation, the Toronto ZooShare project exemplifies how an engaged community can be catalysts for impactful regional projects that affect the environment and the local economy.

A biogas plant located in the heart of the Greater Toronto Area provides a large opportunity for the region. Tom Ferencevic, CEO of Fitec, understood the scale of potential for the plant, and advised on the project’s model and design during ZooShare’s early stages.

With a nearly limitless supply of urban organic waste within close proximity, ZooShare would need more than just a run-of-the-mill agricultural digester. The facility required precise equipment that could handle a variety of contaminated food wastes. The Fitec Self-Cleaning Digester excels at removing contaminants from waste. It uses a floor sweeper to collect grit from the bottom of the digester and a skimming system to collect floating contaminants like plastic. By installing the Self-Cleaning Digester, ZooShare is able to make the most out of its opportunities as an urban biogas plant, maintaining maximum capacity for energy production and reducing maintenance needs.

The ZooShare biogas plant has been operational since 2021, receiving feedstock from many waste management companies in the Greater Toronto Area. The continuous action of the floor sweeper and skimming system have been collecting approximately 13 tonnes of contaminants on a weekly basis, accounting for approximately 7% of the incoming pre-treated food waste.
